Female Hair Loss

Female hair loss is something that affects more than half of women at some point in their lives. While women rarely become frankly bald like men, hair loss can be devastating both cosmetically and emotionally.

The first sign of female hair loss is often excessive shedding while combing and brushing. As hair loss progresses over time, women tend to notice thin or patchy areas where bald scalp is visible. Hormonal shifts associated with hypothyroidism, pregnancy and menopause can cause and accelerate the thinning process. As well, many women suffer from traction alopecia or scarring of the scalp from wearing ponytails or braids.

Most women will try to change their hairstyle to camouflage, but this may worsen the hair loss. Some women will turn to hair loss treatments found on the internet or in magazines- including ‘secret’ formulas or herbal remedies with promises that seem too good to be true and are in fact not based on credible evidence (or particularly effective).

Some women will seek help from their family physician but their concerns are often dismissed as a normal part of ageing. Even physicians with some knowledge of hair loss will offer only limited solutions that patients can purchase at a drug store.

Our team has dedicated their practice to women’s hair loss and know that having healthy natural looking hair is an investment in your future. It contributes not only to self-assurance and self-confidence, but to your overall wellness and vitality.

“Meeting Dr. Sreenivasan (Dr. Bobby) has been a life changing experience for me. Dr. Bobby is extremely knowledgeable, kind and compassionate. I’ve had 3 sessions of PRP and now doing annual boosters to keep this amazing hair I now have! He took the time to listen and explain the procedure and explore the reason why my hair was thinning. I was expecting it to be more of a painful procedure, but it was almost painless with the device they used. Dr. Bobby and his team are AMAZING! Thank you, Dr. Bobby, Nafisa and Adriana.”

Your Consultation

The first step is to thoroughly investigate and properly diagnosis the reasons for your hair loss- with a clinic that specializes in women’s hair loss. Dr. Sreenivasan is uniquely qualified in Calgary given his extensive experience with women’s health, hormones, and the latest developments in women’s’ hair restoration as a member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS).

Consultations begin with a thorough assessment of your scalp using dermoscopy, laboratory tests and in some cases a biopsy. Only after determining the root cause of hair loss do we provide options.

Often, we find the hair loss may not be as simple as female pattern baldness or alopecia, rather it may be a symptom of something else systemic within the body such as nutritional deficiencies, hormone imbalances, stress responses and even underlying disease processes. In some circumstance, hair loss in women can be corrected with a change in medication, or a change in diet or lifestyle

At Sante HRI, we pride ourselves on being there not just at the beginning to answer your questions, but throughout your hair restoration journey to keep you physically and emotionally at your best.

Non-Surgical Solutions for Female Hair Loss

We find many women opt for non-surgical hair restoration treatments- they are safe, effective and painless with no social downtime:

Most women experiencing hair loss benefit from our Hair Max supplements- containing seven essential natural ingredients and vitamins linked by clinical studies to hair health.

Through bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, we can lessen the hormonal shifts associated with hypothyroidism, pregnancy and menopause to lessen hair thinning and stimulate hair regrowth.

Regenerative plasma therapy, commonly referred to as ‘PRP’, is a natural treatment that can provide excellent results by releasing growth factors that serve to promote follicular regeneration, hair shaft thickness and extend the hair growth phase.

For some women, SMP is a popular procedure where micro-dots are tattooed onto the scalp to replicate the appearance of tiny hair follicles- adding the illusion of density to thinning hair.

Low-intensity red light stimulates hair growth through a process called photo-biomodulation. Available in-clinic with our Fotona SP Dynamis laser, or a safe and easy to use laser cap for at-home use.

Incorporating the latest advancements in science and technology, this six-month program of three synergistic treatments (regenerative plasma therapy, laser cap and Hair Max supplements) clinically proven to help stabilize hair loss and stimulate hair regrowth are combined to create one powerful solution.

Surgical Solutions for Women’s Hair Loss

Did you know that 1 in 6 hair transplant patients are women? These days- with advancements such as the ARTAS robotic hair transplant system- surgical solutions for women have become mainstream. And with social downtime so minimal, it’s an easy and discrete choice to make.

Hair transplants are well suited for women exhibiting localized hair loss- typically at the front (to advance a high or receding hairline) and the top of the scalp (to fill-in density). And hair transplants can effectively deal with traction alopecia and bald spots- hair loss caused by the pulling of hair due to clips, pony tails or braids.

The ARTAS robotic hair transplant system is particularly well suited for women’s hair transplants- individual follicular units are transplanted to create a natural look- with no scaring. Pain is typically minimal, and most patients find that they can resume their normal activities within days.

More and more we see women coming in with thinning or complete loss of eyebrows- from over-plucking, micro-plaining, hormonal shifts, age or genetics. Eyebrow transplantation is an effective means of restoring naturally growing hair to the eyebrow region in order to create a beautiful frame to the eyes.

We've all heard that regular trims are the key to maintaining long, healthy hair. While this is true in one sense, it's important to know that trims are not associated with hair growth. Hair stylists recommend regular trims to cut off ends that have been damaged by heat and styling, allowing the hair to maintain a healthier appearance. However, there is no correlation between trims and the rate at which hair follicles renew. There are many factors that can cause hair loss, such as genetics, stress or hormonal issues, but the frequency of cutting one's hair is not one of them. When it comes to resurfacing treatments, not all are created equal. Some provide a quick refresh, while others require more downtime. Some are meant to alleviate minor texture issues, and some go deeper into the dermis to tackle significant damage. Some target beautiful, youthful skin, and others target equally beautiful aging skin. Whatever option it may be, resurfacing treatment work to remove dead skin cells and layers of damage, leaving the skin sensitive to harmful UV rays, which makes the months before summer heat the best time to have resurfacing treatment done. Our team of specialists have years of experience that allow them to help patients understand what treatment their skin needs as well as the best way to take care of it post-treatment.
