Treat Uneven Tone and Texture

Healthy skin is beautiful skin- and while most of us long for a radiant and smooth complexion, we’re often plagued with skin issues that make this goal seem hard to attain. Through the ageing process our skin texture can appear rough and dehydrated as we lose moisture and collagen, resulting in fine lines and wrinkles. Skin tone may also present uneven due to pigmentation irregularities. The fact is, while smooth, luminous skin may come naturally to a select few, maintenance is necessary to obtain optimal long-lasting results.

What Causes Uneven Skin Tone and Texture

Sun exposure- which becomes cumulative over time. And aging- as cell turnover slows.

No matter the cause, dull and uneven skin tone, rough skin texture and fine lines and wrinkles can make you look tired and aged beyond your years. Fortunately, modern aesthetic treatments can offer effective solutions to address these concerns that age us beyond our years.

In its early stages, sun damage manifests itself as subtle surface changes, such as dehydration, and discoloration. As sun exposure continues, the body produces melanin as a means of protecting itself, which can lead to uneven skin tone as well as other types of discoloration like melasma, rosacea, broken capillaries, freckles and hyperpigmentation. With further exposure, the skin can start producing lesions in the form of actinic keratoses, a precursor to skin cancer.

While we embrace the tales they tell, wrinkles can also make us look tired and drawn. The effects of ageing- often accelerated by UV radiation from sun exposure- breaks down the skin’s connective tissue- collagen and elastin fibers- which lie in the deeper layer of the skin (dermis). Without supportive connective tissue, the skin loses its strength and flexibility- characterized by dynamic wrinkles- those caused by repeated facial movements and static fine lines- those that are always present, even at rest.

Aging and sun damage can lead to changes in the texture of your skin- the way it feels when it is touched. This textural change can take two forms- a thinning of the skin as a result of ageing or a thickening of the skin where extreme sun exposure had occurred.

A lackluster complexion is often the result of a buildup of dead skin cells in the uppermost layer of the skin. This causes skin to scatter light instead of evenly reflecting it, resulting in a loss of radiance.

Calgary’s arctic desert makes dry skin an affliction that affects many people. It is often temporary — you get it only in winter, for example — but for many people it’s a lifelong condition.

Pores are essential to your skin’s health because they provide the oil necessary to keep skin soft and hydrated. Pores become more prominent when they are stretched due to the ageing process or clogged with oil- making them appear larger.

In areas of the face where oil production is heavier, dead skin cells and bacteria can congest pores, resulting in blackheads \or whiteheads – ultimately resulting in a bumpy and irregular skin texture.

SmartXide CO2 Laser

The most assertive resurfacing treatment providing the most dramatic results. Patients have commented that this treatment has taken five years off their appearance.

A fractional ablative procedure for the skin that precisely removes layers of damage, leading to a lighter, tighter, brighter and more youthful-looking appearance.

Thousands of tiny columns of laser energy vaporize the skin tissue in the epidermis/dermis and stimulate the growth of fresh new collagen and elastin. Since only a fraction of the skin is treated, the non-treated adjacent skin promotes fast healing. New collagen production provides a lifting and tightening effect.

It’s more than skin resurfacing, it is deep skin rejuvenation- results are more dramatic than with a non-ablative laser.

Concern: Fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, scars, tone and texture, enlarged pores, deflation and descent.

Areas: Full or partial face, neck, chest, around the eye area and select areas of the body.

60-90 minutes, once.

Dependant on the depth of treatment, up to a week in some cases

Sciton Joule Laser

This platform offers multiple wavelengths offering a solution to all skin types and conditions.

HALO delivers non-ablative and ablative wavelengths to the same microscopic treatment zone, stimulating collagen growth and giving patients the resurfacing results they love, without the discomfort or downtime they expect.

MicroLaser Peel is a light resurfacing treatment limited to the epidermis that evens out skin tone, texture and colour- restoring a youthful glow to the face. Deep Resurfacing is a more aggressive procedure that erases wrinkles, pigmented lesions and other skin irregularities in the epidermis and dermis. Photorejuvenation using BBL or broadband light corrects sun damage, pigmented lesions, vascular lesions, rosacea, active acne, scars and permanently remove hair.

Concern: Fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, pigmented lesions, enlarged pores, skin texture, acne, scarring, deflation and descent and hair removal

Areas: Face & Body

30-60 minutes, one to three times.

Dependant on the depth of treatment, typically none

BBL Photo Rejuvenation

BBL sets the standard in treating skin conditions associated with ageing, acne, loss of firmness, unwanted hair, and sun damage.

BBL (broad-band light) is a non-invasive treatment to deliver correction to stubborn pigmentation irregularities and acne concerns.

The light energy delivered by BBL gently heats the upper layers of your skin. The heat absorbed by the targeted areas will stimulate your skin cells to regenerate. This process will restore your skin to its natural beauty, making it clearer, smoother, vibrant and younger looking.

In one retrospective study, patients receiving one BBL treatment a year for over five years were judged to have skin looking about 10 years younger than its actual age — due to improvement in sun damage, wrinkles, and other signs of ageing skin.

BBL requires fewer treatments to achieve visible and superior results than other IPL systems.

Concern: Hyperpigmentation, rosacea, sun damage, broken capillaries, acne bacteria and inflammation, skin tone and unwanted hair.

Areas: Face and body

15-30 minutes, three to five treatments

Typically none

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion treatments use a mildly abrasive instrument to gently exfoliate the skin, removing the thicker, uneven outer layer including shallow fine lines.

Concerns: Congestion, low grade acne, dry/dehydrated skin, uneven tone and texture.

Areas: Face & Body

30 minutes, three to six treatments

None

Fotona SP Dynamis

Fotona’s SP line of laser systems is expertly designed to reach the skin’s deepest layers while still targeting surface imperfections to provide visually noticeable, long-lasting results. The laser combines an Nd:YAG wavelength with an Er:YAG wavelength to create a versatile system that can perform a wide range of aesthetic services. The combination of 2 different laser technologies allows the SP Dynamis to provide precise functionality while keeping the epidermis safe and comfortable.

Fotona’s SP Dynamis is recognized as one of the most revolutionary aesthetic laser systems, as it’s capable of providing instantly noticeable results. The multi-purpose design gives you the ability to source long-lasting, dramatic results anywhere on the body from as little as 4 treatments, depending on your goals.

Concern: Skin rejuvenation, acne treatment, hair removal, benign lesions, moles, and skin tags, nail fungus treatment, scars and stretch marks, melasma and hyperpigmentation, vein removal and ablation, skin tightening and lifting, hyperhidrosis, incontinence and vaginal tightening.

Areas: All areas of the body, but popular treatment areas are parts of the face, underarms, legs, hands, and feet.

Treatment time will vary depending on the treatment area and may require 1 to 3 sessions. Typical treatment times range between 30 and 60 minutes.

Downtime is typically very minimal but largely depends on the treatment. Most patients are able to return to their daily activities 30 minutes following treatment, where some significant treatments may require up to 5 days of downtime.

HydraFacial

The HydraFacial is a specialized treatment involving patented technology to cleanse, extract, and hydrate your skin. The process involves 3 specific steps to give your skin an instantly gratifying glow that makes you feel great.

The first step is a cleanse and peel, which lightly exfoliates and resurfaces your skin. Then, any dirt and debris are extracted from your pores with gentle suction, and intense moisturizers are applied to hydrate and nourish your skin. The final step helps to fuse and protect your skin’s surface by saturating it with serums packed full of antioxidants and peptides that help it glow.

Concern: Fine lines and wrinkles, elasticity and firmness, even tone and vibrancy, skin texture, brown spots, oily and congested skin, enlarged pores.

Areas: Partial or full face.

30 minutes, as often as monthly to rejuvenate your skin.

None, you can return to work immediately after (although we recommend avoiding makeup for the remainder of the day and even the following).

EndyMed Intensif

The EndyMed Intensif is a microneedling technology that provides optimal comfort and results. Intensif features non-insulated gold needles combined with EndyMed’s proprietary Fractional Pulse Mode technology to generate more seat safely into the skin. Its revolutionary design helps to stimulate collagen production through more uniform heating than insulated needles.

The tapered gold-plated needles provide superior patient comfort and quicker recovery times, typically with little to no bleeding or bruising. Intensif delivers consistent and controlled energy flow for a more even application and result.

Concern: Acne and acne scars, stretch marks, deep wrinkles, and improving overall skin texture.

Areas: Typically full or partial face, but can also be used on other parts of the body, such as the underarms or neck.

Between 30 and 45 minutes depending on the size of the treatment area, 3 to 6 treatments at 2 to 4 week intervals for best results.

Most patients can return to their normal daily activities immediately following treatment, but we recommend avoiding makeup for the remainder of the day. You may experience some redness and swelling for a few hours following treatment. If this affects your ability to work, we recommend taking the rest of the day off.

Jessner Peel

The Jessner peel is a specific type of chemical peel used to remove the top layers of the skin and encourage new, younger-looking skin to grow. The Jessner peel was formulated over 100 years ago to reduce the appearance of discolouration and age spots, wrinkles, scars, and generally even out skin tone.

Many chemical peels have adverse effects on darker skin tone by leaving lasting discolouration. However, Jessner peels can effectively reduce melasma and pigment imperfections on darker skin. Studies have also shown that Jessner peels are an effective treatment for acne scars.

The Jessner peel is a medium peel, which removes skin cells from the epidermis and dermis, the top and upper portion of the middle layer of the skin. The solution comprises a combination of lactic acid, salicylic acid, and resorcinol in a 95% ethanol solution. It can also be added to other peel solutions to increase their effectiveness on scars and hyperpigmentation.

Concern: Dark patches and age spots, uneven skin tone, acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles, melasma, and hyperpigmentation.

Areas: Full face.

15 to 30 minutes, and can be performed every 4 weeks if treatment is looking to solve a significant problem.

Your skin will feel hot and tight immediately following the treatment for up to 24 hours. After, it will begin to flake and peel. Your skin will take between 7 and 14 days to heal completely, during which you should be frequently applying moisturizer and avoiding makeup. If this hinders your ability to work, you may need to take time off.

When it comes to resurfacing treatments, not all are created equal. Some provide a quick refresh, while others require more downtime. Some are meant to alleviate minor texture issues, and some go deeper into the dermis to tackle significant damage. Some target beautiful, youthful skin, and others target equally beautiful aging skin. Whatever option it may be, resurfacing treatment work to remove dead skin cells and layers of damage, leaving the skin sensitive to harmful UV rays, which makes the months before summer heat the best time to have resurfacing treatment done. Our team of specialists have years of experience that allow them to help patients understand what treatment their skin needs as well as the best way to take care of it post-treatment.
