What is Melasma vs. Hyperpigmentation?

Melasma may present as dark grey or brown patches typically on someone’s face. This condition is triggered by heat, humidity and hormones and is often associated with pregnancy due to its prevalence among pregnant women. However, it can occur in any gender at any stage of life.

When certain cells become hyperactive and start producing too much pigment (melanin), they create discolored blemishes on the forehead, cheeks and upper lip. This is similar to the mechanism that causes freckles and age spots, although melasma spots are typically much larger.

Melasma is just one form of hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation occurs when certain areas of the skin develop more melanin, or pigment than others. While hyperpigmentation often develops due to melasma or age spots, it can also appear in tandem with other conditions such as acne.

Treatment Options

Sante Medical offers a wide variety of treatment options and medical-grade skincare products for skin discoloration. Our team will work with you to develop a plan that aligns with your needs and goals.

A chemical peel works by removing the top layers of skin to reveal smoother, more even-toned skin beneath.

The Jessner peel is typically a medium depth peel, which means it removes skin cells from the top layer of your skin, the epidermis, and the upper portion of the middle layer, the dermis.

A MicroLaserPeel removes a thin layer of damaged skin to improve tone/texture and provide a more even appearance. It provides superior results because it can be administered with great precision of depth.

A HydraFacial treatment removes dead skin cells and extracts impurities while simultaneously bathing the new skin with cleansing, hydrating and moisturizing serums. The treatment is soothing, refreshing, non-irritating and immediately effective.

When it comes to resurfacing treatments, not all are created equal. Some provide a quick refresh, while others require more downtime. Some are meant to alleviate minor texture issues, and some go deeper into the dermis to tackle significant damage. Some target beautiful, youthful skin, and others target equally beautiful aging skin. Whatever option it may be, resurfacing treatment work to remove dead skin cells and layers of damage, leaving the skin sensitive to harmful UV rays, which makes the months before summer heat the best time to have resurfacing treatment done. Our team of specialists have years of experience that allow them to help patients understand what treatment their skin needs as well as the best way to take care of it post-treatment.
