Wrinkle Reducer Injections using neuromuscular modulators is one of the most highly recognized, non-surgical cosmetic procedures available today - used for smoothing deep, persistent lines and wrinkles that develop over time and as a preventative measure to help prevent fines lines and wrinkles from forming in the first place.

Frown Lines

Frown (or glabellar) lines form between the brows from repeated facial expression (which goes hand-in-hand with verbal expression), including scowling (hence the name ‘frown’ lines).

Women are more likely to associate frown lines with unwanted signs of aging; men often associate some frown lines with gravitas and wisdom, but when they are too deep men dislike them just as much as women do.

Horizontal Forehead Creases

Horizontal forehead lines are primarily a result of forehead muscles contracting when we raise our eyebrows as part of our normal day-to-day facial expressions.  And as people age, they often use these muscles more habitually to hold eyebrows up to make their eyes look more open. Women often look better with a smooth forehead. We find men on the other hand typically prefer just to soften the lines and prevent them from deepening, rather than eliminating them entirely.

‘Crow’s Feet’

‘Crow’s feet’ are those smile lines radiating from the corners of your eyes out toward your temple that remain when you stop smiling. They typically develop in men and women in their 30s, as a result of the aging of the skin and the three ‘S’s”- smiling, squinting and sleeping.

Lines around the Mouth

Lines that etch vertically above and below the lips are often called ‘smokers lines’ or ‘lipstick lines’ (in that lipstick will often bleed into them) caused by recurring muscle activity.

Bunny Nose Lines

Bunny nose lines form near the top of the nose and on the inside of the eyes.  They are created by hyperactivity of the nasal muscles when smiling or laughing and get the name “bunny lines” because they form by twitching the muscles of the nose.   These wrinkles may be vertical, horizontal or form on a diagonal and appear in the same place on either side of the nose.

Jawline Contouring

Anyone with excessively wide jaws due to large chewing muscles can slim their face- the most important factor is the thickness of the chewing muscle. You can quickly determine if your chewing muscle is enlarged by biting down hard and feeling the outer jawline towards the ear. If the muscle tissue is stiff or enlarged when you clench your teeth, you may be a good candidate for jawline contouring.

Neck Bands

Noticeable neck muscle bands and lines across the neck are a very common occurrence, due to the natural aging process or weight fluctuations. The cause of this is the loosening of the platysma muscle (band of muscles that continues from the collar bone to the jawline) producing lasting vertical neck lines with a beady appearance. As we age, this muscle may loosen and separate into beads that are visible even at rest.

Gummy Smile

When some people smile, their upper lip elevates too far above their upper teeth, exposing their gums and producing what many consider an unattractive ‘gummy smile.'

Underarms and Palms

Many Canadians have a medical condition named hyperhidrosis- better known as severe underarm sweating. Neuromuscular Toxins can be useful by temporarily blocking the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands (see Injections for Hyperhidrosis).

How Wrinkles Form

Wrinkle lines are formed by repetitive creasing of the skin, from the facial expressions we make on a daily basis. Other contributing factors include the natural aging process, weakening or thinning of the skin, gravity, muscle movement and sun damage.

There are two types of wrinkles, static and dynamic. Dynamic expression lines are formed only when the underlying muscle is contracted, and the skin folds to allow for muscle movement. Over time, fine lines become wrinkles and over time wrinkles can become large, deep furrows.

Static lines appear without muscle movement when the face is at rest. Overtimestatic lines appear due to the diminishing quality of the skin (decreased elasticity and thickness) as part of the aging process, and therefore the skin has more of a propensity to become etched with creases.

Neuromuscular Toxins work at best improving dynamic expression lines to help slow the formation of further wrinkling. For static fine lines, wrinkles, and furrows, dermal fillers are the best option to smooth out the skin.

How Neuromuscular Toxins Work

Neuromuscular toxins work by preventing nerve signals in muscles from contracting.

Within three to five days*, the injected muscles begin to weaken and relax, and the wrinkles in the skin soften and often disappear, resulting in a smoother and more relaxed appearance.

Neuromuscular Toxins for Wrinkle Reducer Injections have been available for over 20 years, are Health Canada and FDA-approved and have been proven to be very safe through extensive testing and research.

The Wrinkle Reducer Injection Procedure

Photographs will be taken before the treatment to create a record for yourself, so you can see the transformation from the treatment.  We request for you to complete a health history form to rule out any contraindications between the prescription injection, allergies or medical conditions that you may have, and sign a consent form before treatment.

The procedure is performed with a very fine needle, with a topical numbing agent applied beforehand.  A few pokes of the needle may be needed per area; where a minute amount of neuromuscular toxin is injected very precisely into the muscle treated. The actual injections themselves will only take a few moments.

Discomfort associated with the injection is minor (often compared to the sensation of a bug bite), and many do not even feel the prick of the needle.

After Your Wrinkle Reducer Injection Procedure

After the treatment, most people experience minimal or no downtime, and you can resume normal activities immediately. The injection site may be a bit red with some swelling and bruising, which will quickly subside.

Results will begin to appear in as little as 48 hours, with most people experiencing full results within seven days. The results can last on average 3-6 months and vary between patients. The movement will gradually return to the treatment area if you do not receive further treatments. When patients keep up with their injections on a regular basis, results will last longer, extending the time between treatments.

Will I look Unnatural after a Wrinkle Reducer Injection?

Wrinkle Reducer Injections are intended to enhance the way you look, not change it. When administered by an experienced injector, you will still be expressive, smile or frown. The treatment relaxes only the muscles beneath the lines at the point of injection, so other elements of your facial expression remain active. The sensory nerves are not affected so that you will have a normal feeling in the treated areas. It will not make you look ‘frozen,' expressionless, nor like you ‘had work done.'

Brilliant Distinctions Program

We participate in Allergan’s Brilliant Distinctions Program, where patients earn points every time they receive a Wrinkle Reducer Injection treatment which may be redeemed towards future qualifying procedures.

The Best Candidates

Neuromuscular Modulators are intended for adult men and women of any age. If you want to preserve your youthful appearance or you want to improve the look of existing fine lines and wrinkles, neuromuscular modulators may be the solution for you.  Younger patients (under 30 years of age) are a growing segment of our cosmetic practice. Regular treatments not only reduce the fine lines they already have (preventing the progression of those lines into wrinkles) – it also prevents additional new ones from forming in the future.

And men who may have scoffed at the idea of cosmetic procedures just a decade ago are now finding the treatments appealing to maintain their competitive edge. The number of men receiving injections has grown by 260% over the past ten years- and men now make up about every fifth patient we see for this cosmetic procedure.
