Belkyra (aka Kybella in United States)
Belkyra is a breakthrough non-invasive treatment designed to eliminate excess fat below the chin. Also known as submental fat, excess fat below the chin can be caused by a variety of factors, including aging, obesity, and genetics. The formation of surplus fat in the neck area can lead to the appearance of a “double chin” and may affect one's self-confidence when it comes to their facial profile.
Known as Kybella in the U.S., Belkyra is a Health Canada and FDA-approved injectable designed to restore youthful definition to your chin without the invasiveness of traditional liposuction or plastic surgery. The procedure is highly effective for most, has a very high patient satisfaction rating and has been termed by some as ‘liposuction is a syringe’.
According to a 2015 survey conducted by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, nearly as many consumers are bothered by their double chin (67%) as by lines and wrinkles around the eyes (69%). In fact, the condition, which can make you look older and heavier, even has a name. It’s called submental fullness (fullness under the chin), and can have a negative psychological impact on patients.
The Best Candidates
With over 60% of patients listing their chin area as problematic, many men and women are candidates for a well contoured, well-defined jawline with Belkyra.
How Belkyra Works
Made from a naturally occurring substance known as deoxycholic acid, Belkyra targets submental fat and breaks down fat cells before absorbing them into the body.
Belkyra disrupts the cell membrane of the fat cells that cause the double chin. When the cell membrane of the fat cell is disrupted, the contents of the fat cell, the glycerol and free fatty acids are leaked into the surrounding subcutaneous space. The contents that are leaked in the interstitial space are harmless as the body has a tremendous capacity to naturally remove free fatty acids and glycerol quite safely and effectively. The contents of the fat cell that are released are taken back to the liver for natural processing or through the kidney for elimination.
Unlike traditional cosmetic injectables, which temporarily mask the underlying issue, Belkyra eliminates the problem at its source. The submental fat cells absorbed by the Belkyra injection are removed from the body—meaning there is no need for re-treatment, unless excess fat is gained back.
The Belkyra Procedure
At your consultation, your health history will be discussed, along with your goals for the outcome of the procedure. We will customize your Belkyra treatment regimen, including how many treatments you need, based on your desired chin profile. Many patients experience visible results in 2 to 4 treatment sessions. Then if you want to move forth with the treatment, it can be performed immediately following your consultation.
Photographs will be taken to have a record for yourself so you can see the improvement that has occurred from the treatment.
A small injection grid is applied to the double chin, which facilitates very accurate administration small doses (12-20 in total) of the Belkyra Injectable evenly to the necessary areas of the double chin fat. The actual injection is performed by a very fine needle so it is very tolerable with a topical numbing agent applied beforehand. The actual injections themselves will only take a few minutes.
Discomfort associated with the injection is minimal (often compared to the sensation of a bug bite), often many people do not even feel the prick of the needle. The whole procedure takes a matter of minutes and most patients can leave the office within half an hour.
A typical Belkyra treatment cycle ranges from 2 to 6 injections, spread out over various months. Patients must wait approximately one month between Belkyra injections for optimal results
After Your Belkyra Injection Procedure
There may be minor redness in the treatment area, and you may or may not have a tiny bit of bleeding. These side effects will go away within an hour. Swelling and numbness may occur, but most of it will be gone within 24-48 hours.
Patients usually see results within weeks, and continued improvement is expected with additional treatments.
