Abdominoplasty, also known as a Tummy Tuck, is a surgical option for patients who want to achieve dramatic contouring results in the midsection of the body. Patients may choose abdominoplasty to reverse the effects of pregnancy weight gain, to restore a smooth, flatter abdomen or to trim away loose folds of skin that are often left behind after a dramatic weight loss.
What A Tummy Tuck Can Do For You
A full abdominoplasty is a major operation that involves the removal of the skin between the navel and the pubic area. We also lift the skin above the belly button and pull it down over the abdominal wall, creating a new “buttonhole” for the bellybutton in the process. We further shape and flatten the abdomen by tightening up the fascia (fabric around the muscles) and treating the hips and pubic area with liposuction.
Abdominoplasty focuses on the front of the abdomen; it does not tighten the skin of the hips or legs, and it is not a method of weight loss. Liposuction can be done around the hips, flanks and back if necessary to produce additional sculpting around this area. Occasionally a circumferential body lift is indicated if a person has lost a large amount of weight and has loose skin all the way around the torso.
About The Procedure
The Right Patient
Good candidates for abdominoplasty are close to their ideal body weight and in good health. This procedure is not a method of weight loss but rather a way to put the finishing touches on your transformation. It cannot remove excess fat from inside your abdomen. A Tummy Tuck will not improve the quality of the skin in the midsection, and there will also be a long, permanent scar that stretches from hipbone to hipbone. While the scar will fade over time, it could take up to a year or more before settling into its permanent appearance. An abdominoplasty can improve the way your clothes fit, including your bathing suit.
You will need to take your schedule into consideration as well since it is important to give yourself sufficient time after surgery for a safe and healthy recovery. Recovery from an abdominoplasty surgery will take one month to return to normal activities and up to two months to a more active lifestyle. Patients will spend one or two nights in recovery at Mineral Springs Hospital in Banff.
